Photographer Marika Kecskeméti (b. 1966) approaches the city like a treasure trove of stories. The apartment building is a book and the city is a library. The Kecskeméti's pictures tell about the cities, and its time levels and layers. They speak of past worlds, give the feeling that buildings are living and thinking beings, that they have a memory. The facade is visible to everyone, but the curious will find courtyards, gates, stairways and common balconies behind it. The border between public and private, visible and invisible. Every surface is a manifestation of the layers of time, wear and tear and life. As a photographer, Kecskeméti is an urban explorer who takes comfort in the fact that countless people have been there before her.

”I only began to take photos when I gave up my camera. I like to bike, walk, sneak into stairwells and peek into courtyards. I take photos of the city and its buildings, the life within spaces. My revelations must come quickly, before the traffic light changes, the lift arrives, or the crow has flown off the roof opposite.”
