This unexpected exhibition presents a collection of works that explore three-dimensional textures, color combinations, and various techniques used to create texture-filled surfaces. The materials used by the artists, such as glass and paper, serve as the foundation for the pieces. The artworks blend the organic and industrial, as well as the controlled and spontaneous, in ways that reflect each artist’s unique approach.

Hautamäki’s Study series consists of small oil pastel drawings on paper, a project that began as a morning routine upon arriving at the studio in the fall of 2020. As the name suggests, the Study series aims to explore color and space through clear geometric forms. In the Vases series, Hautamäki pays homage to the tradition of still life painting, using the vase or pot as a gateway and concrete motif to investigate new forms of expression and create images filled with dynamic tension. The Vases series combines acrylic, oil, and oil pastels with the new addition of collage techniques.

Mustonen’s glass sculptures were created at the Iittala glass factory between 2021 and 2023, using graphite and wooden molds. These works are based on manipulated line drawings and paintings. Most of the pieces were exhibited in the Variants show at the Finnish Glass Museum during summer 2023. The glassblowing was executed by master craftsmen Tero Välimaa and Arto Vilkki.
