Visual artist Petri Ala-Maunus (b. 1970) has turned his paintings of cliché subjects — sunsets, landscapes, and selfies — into exhaustive conceptual investigations about the nature of art and the collective imagination. His landscape series takes the 19th-century German Romantic artists as a point of departure. Ala-Maunus’ work is included in the collections of Helsinki Art Museum, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, and Turku Art Museum.

"Well, there’s been one important theme or motif in my art for almost 30 years, and that’s the landscape. I’ve painted in different manners during this time, but somehow the landscape has remained the main motif. In this piece I started from the idea of a land- scape from the romantic era and how it could be turned into graphic art. So, I made a line drawing of a tree trunk, like a twisted pine tree that turns in different directions. Then I remembered these paint by number sets that you can order with custom images. The picture has numbered colour areas and as you fill them in, it becomes a painting. Lately I’ve also been very inspired by black metal music. I don’t really listen to it, but visually it’s interesting. The artists wear masks, spikes and leather jackets. There’s a lot of DIY involved, and I like that a lot."
